Why is taking responsibility for something called ownership?

If they sell their piece of that thing, and the profit is theirs. The incentive to help make it successful and valuable is aligned.

If someone does not own a part of the thing they are building. When it is sold, they are not only out of a project that they were working on, they are missing out on the profits from their invested effort.

An employees goals of making money are out of alignment with making someone else’s project more valuable.
