Maintenance

Maintenance may be the most important skill humans need to learn. We are great at creating, exploring, and destroying. But we are pretty bad at maintaining.

There are two approaches to maintenance

  1. Replacing parts until you fix the problem, this gets expensive and doesn’t always work but doesn’t required a skilled technician.

  2. Diagnostic and problem solving the root of the cause. This approach is beneficial, but requires that the technician understands not only how the system works, but how each component works and can be fixed.

Maintenance is also kind of like the wild west. Nobody wants to hear about how you got something to work that was working yesterday. There is no code compliance and there is no permitting. just get it fixed. Maintenance staff end up finding work arounds to fix things more quickly, or they find solutions to make things not break.

If the maintenance person does maintenance perfectly, they are invisible. If the maintenance person doesn’t do maintenance perfectly, they will be scolded for not doing their job.

The problem with maintenance is that it never ends, so the motivation fades away.

Our planet is an ecosystem that literally maintains itself, and we are screwing is up. How are we ever going to survive on a starship, keeping up on maintenance through generations.
