Danger in a Box

In grappling there are four skills that participants need to learn early in their journey. The third skill is the ability to out maneuver your opponent and making them less comfortable than you are.

Many experienced grapplers will advise you to focus on position before submission.

These are the skills to posit and submit.

Angles- where can you attack them while they cannot attack you

  • Positioning - The box of danger is located nipples to nuts, tight to your torso.

    • When you are able to isolate your opponents joints or neck, you can provide maximum force in the box of danger.

  • Flanking - Set up the situation so that you can attack while your opponent cannot.

    • Avoid their box, do not allowing your opponent to isolate your neck or joints in their box.

Finishing- Pinch and compress.

  • Pinch - Do not squeeze your submission until you have to correct grip.

    • Once your pinch is in the right place, ensure that you have control of your opponent so they cannot escape.

  • Compress - Use your whole body to force their body to do things they don’t want it to do.

    • Compression may look like pushing their head to their chest while your choke arm is around their neck. This may also look like using your whole body to move their joint in a direction it was not intended to move.
